Creations Magazine: Alternative Therapies That Benefit Lyme & Long by Danielle Pashko – New York City

Living immunocompromised with the debilitating symptoms of Lyme disease and long COVID-19 can be overwhelming. While medical treatments are still being developed, incorporating alternative therapies into your lifestyle now can fill in the gaps to help alleviate symptoms.

Having personally battled both Lyme disease and long COVID-19, I have successfully managed my energy levels through six lifestyle changes that have reduced my symptoms and enhanced my quality of life. Through my experience, I hope that you can discover some practical guidance that can make a meaningful difference if you too are struggling with the symptoms of Lyme disease or long COVID. Here are some strategies that have worked for me:

Compression Therapy: a technique that can improve circulation, reduce swelling, and alleviate symptoms associated with Lyme disease and long COVID-19. When you wear compression garments, such as socks, stockings or boots, blood flow is optimized, enhancing the delivery of oxygen and nutrients to tissues, while flushing out waste. I start my mornings wearing compression boots for about 30-40 minutes.

Acupuncture: An ancient Chinese practice that involves the insertion of thin needles into specific points on the body to restore balance and promote healing. This practice can help stimulate the flow of energy and improve overall wellbeing. Acupuncture has helped me reduce pain, fatigue, and other symptoms associated with my Lyme disease and long COVID-19.

Anti-Inflammatory Diet: Focuses on nutrient-dense foods that have natural anti-inflammatory properties, such as fresh fruits and vegetables, fatty fish rich in omega-3 fatty acids, nuts, seeds, and healthy fats like olive oil. Slowly, minimize and eventually eliminate processed foods, refined sugars, and trans fats, which can exacerbate inflammation and impair the immune system, and replace them with these healthier, whole food options. There are some days that I feel like my body requires meat, but I always make sure that the meat I eat is organic and grass fed.

Mushroom Supplementation: Boosts the immune system. Long known for their immune-boosting properties, certain varieties of mushrooms, such as reishi, shiitake, and maitake, contain bioactive compounds that can modulate the immune system and enhance its response. I use shiitake-derived AHCC as my mushroom supplement because it is the most researched with more than 30 human clinical studies and has been studied on both Lyme disease and COVID-19. A recent study published in Pathogens shows AHCC supplementation enhances resistance against mild and severe COVID-19 infection mainly by promoting innate and adaptive T-cell immune responses. There is also a human clinical trial underway at the World Health Organization studying the possible impact of AHCC on long COVID-19 infection.

Yoga: A gentle and holistic practice that combines physical postures, breath control, and mindfulness. I spend about 20 minutes on my yoga mat each morning. Sometimes it’s a very gentle practice with only restorative movements, and on days that I feel stronger I engage in a more rigorous vinyasa flow. Keeping a regular yoga practice can enhance flexibility, strength and balance, while reducing stress, improving immune function, and reducing inflammation.

Meditation and Prayer: Reduces stress, promotes emotional well-being, and enhances the healing process. You don’t have to be religious to practice meditation or prayer. Mindfulness meditation, in particular, focuses on staying present in the moment, observing thoughts and sensations without judgment. Find a quiet and comfortable space, set aside dedicated time each day, and practice deep breathing, relaxation techniques, or guided meditations. I personally like engaging in prayer as a source of solace and connection to something greater than myself. Prayer helps me focus on my belief that there is a greater power that will guide me to healing. Explore different techniques and practices to find what resonates most with you.
